Woolly mammoth cloning update.
Early last year it was revealed that Japanese scientists were working on techniques to allow the cloning of a mammoth (story here), where the leading researcher was quoted as saying “all we need is a good sample of soft tissue from a frozen mammoth”.
Now a report has indicated that well preserved bone marrow has been found in a mammoth thigh bone, which was extracted from Siberian permafrost in the same area as this recently revived 30,000 year old flower. Now a joint Russian/Japanese team has announced a joint research project aimed at re-creating the mammoth, which they say is likely to take five years.

The key to cloning the woolly mammoth is to replace the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those extracted from the mammoth’s bone marrow cells. Doing this, according to the researchers, can result in embryos with mammoth DNA.

Sounds great, just nobody tell Ian Malcolm.
