Next generation Wi-Fi could arrive this year.
802.11ac is the next generation of Wi-Fi, which will eventually replace the current 802.11n. The new 5GHz technology will allow 1Gbps or greater speeds, which is comparable to the faster end of current ethernet (wired) transmission speeds.
Former Broadcom bigshot Gerson Lehrman said in a G+ chat this week that he expects the Broadcom 11ac chips to be released in wireless routers by the end of the year, and possibly also in some desktop computers at the same time. He expects it to be embedded in new mobile phones from the start of next year, where it will allow faster Wi-Fi with a longer range and at less power consumption - perfect for phones.
As well as super-fast copying of files and data, 11ac will also allow for wireless streaming of high definition 1080p video - something that often stutters over 11n. Something tells me if Apple is planning to release a TV this year, they’re waiting for this chip.
