New type of metal is the lightest in the world.
The metal is said to be 100 times lighter than Styrofoam, and is 99.99 percent air.
The “micro-lattice cellular” architecture is of a similar design to larger scale latticed structures such as the Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate Bridge.

“The trick is to fabricate a lattice of interconnected hollow tubes with a wall thickness 1,000 times thinner than human hair,” said Hughes Research Lab researcher Tobias Schaedler.

The researchers explain that materials actually get stronger, as size reduces towards the nanoscale. One possible use for the material will be to create ultra-light batteries.
